Our Thoughts and Commentary

I’ll let you in on a little secret … on-premises video conferencing servers are not dead.

It’s true that cloud has rightfully taken most of the limelight. No argument there. But that doesn’t mean self-hosted video bridges – a.k.a. MCUs for the tenured folks in the audience – have gone the way of the PalmPilot, 8-Track tapes, and the Atari 2600.

Many companies and organizations (think Government agencies, research facilities, gas and oil companies, large banks, telecommunications companies, telehealth networks, etc.) can’t or choose not to “go cloud” with their video conferencing.

Some organizations simply want or need to keep their data local – meaning on their own network and equipment. Sometimes scale is the issue. For example, Karnataka Bank is bringing video to 15,000 employees. Even at a few dollars a head, a video calling service would cost a pretty penny. Other times, it’s the need for custom features or integrations.

The net is that sometimes on-premises (CPE) video conferencing makes perfect sense.

I’ve participated in dozens of briefings with TrueConf over the years, and I’m consistently impressed by their quarterly revenue growth, customer acquisition stats, and innovation cadence. For obvious reasons, Moscow-based TrueConf has not penetrated the US marketplace. But step outside the 50 states and parts of Europe, and much of the world is TrueConf’s on-premises oyster.

While out of sight and out of mind might be convenient, TrueConf offers a feature-rich platform, cost-effective platform that checks the boxes for massive organizations around the world. Karnataka Bank is a nice win for TrueConf, and one of many 1,000+ user wins I’ve heard about in the last year.
